Herron Point Campground

Need a Weekend Getaway or a Day Trip Close to Perth?

Herron Point, Birchmont WA 6214 is 100 kilometres south of the Perth CBD, on the eastern side of the Peel-Harvey inlet.  It is a nature-based campsite along the shoreline of the Harvey Estuary. Head south down the Forrest Highway and turn right (West) on Herron Point Rd for about 4kms.  The campgrounds are first come first served and cannot be pre-booked.

At $7.50 per night per person over the age of 16 the rates pretty good given there is a camp kitchen, flushing toilets, access to running, but not drinking water, solar lights around the campsite and generators are ok between 8 am-8 pm.  The campground has a maximum two-night stay, but on public holidays this stretches out to four nights. Campfires can be had in designated fire pits in season, but best to check with the caretakers.

As the camping is right on the inlet, this campsite is perfect for water-based activities such as bird watching, swimming, wading, fishing, crabbing, kayaking, snorkelling and small boats can be launched from a beach ramp. On the crabbing front, day-trippers can park up and have a scoop around the inlet in the shallow waters in calm weather for a good feed.

Remember to check all relevant legislation for licensing, season (closed 1st  September to 31st October for the Peel-Harvey Inlet) size and bag limits, you need a license to fish from a boat unless fishing under another license holder on the boat and sticking to their bag limit.  Otherwise if scooping from the shore no license is required, but strict bag limits of 10 crabs per person or license holder apply, and on a boat, the limit is 20 crabs if there are two licensed fishers.  All taken crabs need to be 127mm taken from the spike on the carapace to the other. Male crabs are blue or purple while female crabs are brown. Females are allowed to be taken in Western Australia so long as they are above the size limit and are not ‘berried’ which means carrying eggs and can be easily seen as per the fisheries link below.
